Plagron Lightmix 50L — Low EC Growing Substrate for Control and Rapid Root Development
Best for: Growers who want flexibility to feed their own way, from seedlings through to flowering
Our thoughts
Lightmix is the smart choice if you want a growing medium that gets out of your way and lets you call the shots on nutrition. Minimal pre-fertilisation, low EC, and an airy peat-perlite blend that encourages proper root development from day one. One we recommend a lot for growers stepping up from basic compost.
Plagron Lightmix 50L is a peat and perlite blend designed for growers who want control. It arrives with just enough nutrients to support seedlings and young plants for one week, then you're in the driving seat. The low EC value (0.9–1.6 mS/cm) won't shock delicate roots, and the airy texture encourages rapid establishment and fast, healthy growth through both vegetative and flowering stages.
How it compares
This sits in the flexible, grower-controlled segment of the Plagron range and beyond.
-
Vs. Plagron Growmix: Growmix is pre-fertilised for three weeks and includes worm castings—better for hands-off growing. Lightmix gives you control from week two.
-
Vs. Plagron Allmix: Allmix is organic-focused with six weeks of nutrition built in. Lightmix is the mineral feeder's choice.
-
Vs. BioBizz Light Mix: Similar flexibility positioning, but Lightmix's formulation is engineered specifically for both mineral and organic systems.
In plain terms: you're getting a blank canvas that won't fight you, at a price point that makes sense for growers scaling up.
Usage guidance
Lightmix works across the full growing cycle, from propagation through to harvest.
Seedlings and young plants (weeks 1–2)
Plant seedlings or 1–2 week old cuttings straight into Lightmix. The one-week pre-fertilisation window means you don't need to worry about nutrient lockout or deficiency during critical root establishment. The fine structure supports optimal root development.
Vegetative growth (week 2 onwards)
Start introducing your chosen nutrient regime in week two. Works cleanly with Plagron Terra Grow, mineral brands, or organic systems like Alga Grow. Low EC means you won't experience salt buildup from the substrate itself.
Flowering stage
Switch to a flowering nutrient (Terra Bloom, Alga Bloom, or equivalent) and let the airy peat-perlite structure do its job. Proper drainage and oxygen availability support strong yields.
Watering approach
The perlite component ensures good drainage. Water when the top inch feels dry—the substrate won't become compacted or waterlogged.

- Seedling propagation and young plant establishment
Best suited to setups where control and consistency matter, and where you're confident enough to manage feeding from week two onwards.
Our take
This is a proper growing substrate that doesn't add unnecessary complications. Low EC keeps young roots safe, airy texture supports development, and the minimal pre-fertilisation means you're not fighting against a loaded substrate. It works with whatever nutrient system you choose—that's the point of it.
End-of-line stock, so you're getting a trusted growing medium at a much lower price than usual. Worth picking up while clearance stock lasts.
