Shogun Samurai Hydro Grow A & B — Two-Part Hydroponic Base Nutrients with SmartZen Technology
Best for: Hydroponic growers in vegetative phase wanting UK-made nutrients that actually deliver without the premium import markup
Our thoughts
Shogun's done something clever here. They've taken the science from commercial greenhouse operations, bundled it into a two-part hydroponic nutrient that's affordable, and backed it with SmartZen — their proprietary yield-boosting ingredient. It works, and you're not paying twice the price for a Dutch or American import. One we sell a lot of for growers stepping up from single-part feeds.
Shogun Samurai Hydro Grow A & B is a complete two-part base nutrient designed specifically for the vegetative growth phase in hydroponic systems. Made in the UK with carefully refined ingredients and formulated with SmartZen technology — a yield-enhancing blend proven in greenhouse trials to increase yields by up to 8% over standard NPK formulations — it gives you the performance of premium imports at a price that makes sense. Available in both Hard and Soft Water formulations to match UK water profiles, so no guessing.
How it compares
In the two-part hydroponic nutrient category, Samurai Hydro sits in the performance-driven mid-to-premium tier.
- Premium imported brands (Athena, Advanced Nutrients, CANNA) command 30-50% higher pricing for similar NPK
- Shogun delivers competitive performance with the exclusive SmartZen ingredient at a lower cost
- Two-part design preserves micronutrients that single-part feeds cannot hold in suspension
- UK-made alternative to Dutch and American competitors — shorter supply chain, better value
The real edge: SmartZen is independently proven. That's not marketing fluff. It measurably improves nutrient uptake and assimilation.
Usage guidance
Samurai Hydro Grow works across any hydroponic system — NFT, DWC, Ebb & Flow, media-based — but the mixing protocol is non-negotiable.
Mixing instructions
Add Part A to your reservoir first, mix thoroughly, then add Part B and mix again. Never mix the bottles together neat. Always add one part to water at a time. This prevents micronutrient precipitation and keeps everything available to your plants.
Dosing for vegetative growth
Apply at 2-3ml per litre of water (range 1-4ml/L depending on system and plant demand). Maintain EC between 1.3-2.5 and pH between 5.5-6.6.
Media-based systems
Run 10-40% runoff daily to keep fresh nutrients available in the root zone. This prevents nutrient lockout and salt buildup.
System compatibility
Works seamlessly with the broader Shogun additive range (Zenzym, Katana Roots) for maximum results, though compatible with other reputable products if you're running a mixed system.

Our take
This is a properly formulated two-part hydroponic feed that doesn't ask you to choose between quality and price. SmartZen is the standout — it's science-backed, independently tested, and it works. The Hard and Soft Water variants mean you're not over-feeding or under-feeding based on regional water chemistry.
Good time to buy while stock lasts. If you're running hydroponics and haven't tried Shogun, this is a straightforward entry point. Does exactly what it should, and costs less than the alternatives.
