Omega Far Red CFL — Market-Leading Flowering Light at Entry-Level Running Costs
Best for: Growers wanting to finish plants strong without racking up electricity bills
Our thoughts
Omega's Far Red CFL has a proper reputation for a reason. Independent testing showed it outperforming rivals on the UK market, and it genuinely delivers higher PAR output than you'd expect from the wattage. If you're serious about finishing plants without LED costs, this is the lamp.
The Omega Far Red CFL is a self-ballasted compact fluorescent lamp engineered specifically for the late flowering stage. Available in 125W, 200W, 300W, and 450W, it runs on standard 2700K warm red spectrum — exactly what plants need when they're putting on weight. Plug it straight into a mains socket, screw it into any standard E40 fitting, and you're done. No separate ballast, no complications. Uses two-thirds less energy than old incandescent bulbs, runs cool enough to sit close to plant material, and produces yields that punch above its wattage.
How it compares
Omega Far Red sits at the premium end of the CFL market, but not for the price.
- Independent testing ranked it top on the UK market for output and reliability
- Higher PAR efficiency than Maxibright and LUMii at comparable cost
- Self-ballasted design vs budget brands that sometimes need external ballasts
- Smoother beam pattern — significantly fewer hot spots than older CFL tech
- Costs a fraction of LED flowering setups to run and buy
You're paying for proven performance, not marketing.
Usage guidance
The Omega Far Red CFL is built for one job: finishing plants in the late flowering stage.
Late flowering boost
Run this from week 5–6 onwards, depending on variety. The 2700K spectrum triggers the plant's natural red-light response, encouraging denser structure and heavier finish. Coverage reaches up to 80cm × 80cm depending on height and wattage.
Wattage selection
125W suits small setups or supplementary use. 200W–300W covers mid-size rooms properly. 450W handles larger spaces or multiple plants. Start with one per 80cm × 80cm area for solid results.
Space and heat
Unlike HPS, CFLs run cool enough to position closer to foliage without burn risk. That matters when space is tight. No cooling extraction fan needed — a major saving on running costs.
Combined spectrum approach
For best results, run Deep Blue (6400K) during veg, switch to Dual Spectrum in early flower, then bring in Far Red for the final push. Omega make lamps across the spectrum specifically for this rotation.
