Jiffy Soil Plugs — Budget-Friendly Peat Propagation Plugs for Seeds & Cuttings
Best for: Budget-conscious growers starting seeds or taking cuttings without spending a fortune on propagation kit
Our thoughts
Jiffy Soil Plugs are one of those products that do exactly what they should, day in, day out. You're getting properly sterilised, pH-adjusted rooting plugs at a price that actually makes sense. One we sell a lot of for new growers. Fair warning: the netting can be fussy if you're not careful, but once you know the trick, they're genuinely reliable.
Jiffy Soil Plugs are compressed peat rooting plugs designed for seed germination and cutting propagation across soil, hydroponics, and hydroponic systems. Each plug arrives dried and compressed, then expands 3-4 times its size when soaked in water. They come pre-sterilised, lightly fertilised with low-ammonium nutrients, and pH-adjusted to around 5.3, giving you a ready-made rooting environment without any guesswork. Simple, reliable, and economical — exactly what propagation should be.
How it compares
Peat plugs sit in the budget tier of propagation media, but they're not cheap because they're poor quality.
-
vs Rapid Rooters: Rapid Rooters are bark-based and colonise with beneficial microbes; Jiffy plugs are peat and faster to use out of the bag. Both work well, just different approaches.
-
vs Rockwool cubes: Rockwool offers superior air-to-water ratio and is reusable; peat plugs are simpler to use, more forgiving on moisture, and cost half as much per unit.
-
vs Coco coir plugs: Coco is peat-free and more sustainable; peat plugs are cheaper, more established, and easier to find in the UK.
The honest take: if you're after the lowest cost per plug with reliable results, Jiffy plugs are hard to beat. You're not paying for premium branding — you're getting proper kit at a much lower price than usual.
Usage guidance
Getting them ready
Soak your Jiffy plugs in water for about an hour. They'll expand to their full size and be ready to use. They come with a pre-made hole for seeds or cuttings.
Seed germination
Drop a seed into the hole, pinch the top closed lightly, and keep the plug moist. Once the tap root appears, transplant the whole plug into your growing medium of choice — soil, rockwool, hydroponics, whatever your setup is. The netting will degrade naturally, so you don't need to remove it.
Taking cuttings
Place pre-soaked plugs in a propagation tray. Take healthy cuttings with sharp, clean cuts, dip the cut end in rooting gel (Clonex works well), and push into the plug. Sit the tray in a propagator with a humidity dome, keep it moist, and mist 2-3 times daily. Roots will develop in 7-14 days depending on what you're growing.
The netting thing
The fabric wrap keeps the plug intact but can restrict roots if you're not paying attention. The trick: once roots start pushing through, gently squeeze and fluff the plug to loosen the netting. Some growers remove the netting entirely if they're fussy — entirely up to you. The wrap is degradable, so it'll break down naturally over time.
After rooting
Once your cuttings or seedlings have rooted through the plug, transplant the whole thing into rockwool, soil, or a hydroponics system. The plug stays in place and continues supporting the root ball.

Our take
Jiffy Soil Plugs are genuinely good value. You're getting a sterilised, pH-adjusted, pre-fertilised rooting plug for a fraction of what premium alternatives cost. Yes, there's a learning curve with moisture and netting management, but that's not a quality problem — that's just how peat plugs work.
If you're starting out with cuttings or seeds and don't want to spend a fortune on propagation kit, these are worth picking up. They do exactly what they should, and at the price point, they're hard to argue with. Good time to buy while clearance stock lasts.
