IWS Flood & Drain Pots, Stands and Outers (10.5L) — Modular Hydroponic System for Serious Growers
Best for: Growers running 6+ plants who want automated feeding, precision control, and yields that actually justify the setup
Our thoughts
This is proper kit that's been doing the job for decades. IWS Flood & Drain systems are known for being some of the best-yielding setups out there, and for good reason. Once it's running, you're not fussing with hand-feeding or worrying about timing — the system handles it. That's the whole point.
The IWS Flood & Drain system is a modular active hydroponic solution that automates nutrient delivery to your plants while giving you complete control over feed cycles. Inner pots sit inside outer pots on stands, and when the system floods, nutrient solution rises through the substrate from underneath, saturating the rootzone before draining back to the reservoir. Every flood cycle brings fresh oxygen to the roots — that's where the growth comes from.
This is the system growers choose when hand-feeding stops making sense and they want serious yields without fussing. It scales from 6 pots to 48+ — add containers whenever you're ready to expand.
How it compares
The IWS Flood & Drain sits in the active hydroponic premium segment, competing against passive systems (AutoPot) and continuous-flow designs (NFT).
-
vs AutoPot: IWS will grow faster and harder — you're forcing oxygenated nutrient to the roots on a schedule you control, not waiting for passive wicking
-
vs NFT systems: Works with any growing medium (clay pebbles, coco, mixes) and bigger plants — NFT is better for leafy greens only
-
vs hand-fed buckets: Removes the guesswork, scales easily, and outperforms inconsistent manual feeding every time
-
Media flexibility: Unlike dripper systems (Wilma), this works with clay, coco, or 60/40 blends without compromise
Usage guidance
System setup
The Big Punch inner (10.5L capacity) sits inside the outer pot on the stand. Nutrient solution from your reservoir is pumped into the outer pot via the pipework. As it fills, the substrate inside the inner pot becomes saturated. Once flooded, the solution drains back to the reservoir, refreshing the oxygen in the rootzone.
Growing media
The Big Punch design works with any medium: clay pebbles, coco coir, or 60/40 clay and coco blends. Clay pebbles are the classic choice — a 10L pot of dry clay can absorb up to 5L of water, releasing it slowly between floods.
Flood cycle timing
Start with 4-6 floods per day during active growth, adjusting based on how quickly the substrate dries between cycles. More frequent floods mean more oxygen hits, faster growth. The beauty of this system is precision — you're not guessing, you're controlling.
Plant rotation
Rotate the inner pot by 45 degrees every 2-3 days to keep roots away from the central tube and ensure even growth across the pot.
Scaling up
If you're running 36+ pots, stick with the Big Punch. For smaller setups mixing clay and coco together, the Culture Inner (6.5L) has sealed sides to prevent substrate fragments blocking the system.

Who this is for
- Experienced growers moving from hand-fed or passive systems to automation and higher yields
- Commercial or semi-commercial operations running 12+ plants where consistency matters
- Growers who want precision control over feed timing and nutrient delivery
- Anyone who's fed up with daily watering schedules and wants the system to handle it
- Growers committed to maximising yield per pot — IWS systems are known for being among the best-yielding setups out there
This is not entry-level kit — it's for growers who've proven they can manage a system and now want it to work harder for them.
Our take
The IWS Flood & Drain has been the proven workhorse for serious growers for decades. It's not the cheapest option, but it's built on a simple principle that works: flood the roots with oxygenated nutrient, drain it back, repeat. That cycle delivers growth and yields that passive systems simply can't match.
If you're running enough plants that hand-feeding is becoming a pain, or you're serious about maximising what each pot produces, this is worth the investment. End-of-line stock on this one, so you're getting proper hydroponic kit at a much lower price than usual. Good time to buy while clearance stock lasts.
