Black/White Sheeting (85mu) - Light-Blocking Reflective Room Liner
Best for: Growers lining a room, cupboard or DIY grow space who need to block light leaks and reflect light back onto plants.
Our thoughts
This is the classic budget way to turn a normal room into a usable grow space - black outer to stop light escaping (or getting in during the dark cycle), white inner to bounce light back where it's useful. Not glamorous, but it does the job at a fraction of the cost of a proper tent.
Black/White sheeting is a two-sided polythene sheet, black on one face and white on the other, sold by the metre from a roll at 85 micron thickness. The black side is used facing outward to block light from escaping (important during a plant's dark cycle) or entering from outside, while the white inner face reflects light back onto the plants rather than absorbing it, which a plain black sheet would do.
It's commonly used to line the walls, ceiling and floor of a DIY grow room, cupboard conversion, or any space that isn't a purpose-built tent, and can also serve as a cheap protective floor or bench covering during any messy stage of a grow.
How it compares
This sits at the budget end of light-blocking, reflective lining material.
- Orca Grow Film offers higher light reflectivity and better durability than standard black/white sheeting, at a noticeably higher price per metre.
- Mylar-style diamond film reflects more efficiently again but is thinner and more prone to tearing or creasing than 85 micron poly sheeting.
- Compared with a purpose-built grow tent, sheeting is cheaper and more flexible for odd-shaped spaces, but takes more effort to fit properly and won't be as fully sealed against light leaks.
For anyone lining a room or cupboard rather than buying a tent, this is a proven, low-cost way to get most of the benefit at a fraction of the price.
Usage guidance
Fit it with the black side facing any light source outside your growing area.
Wall lining
Fix sheeting to walls with the white side facing into the room and the black side against the wall, using staples, tape or battens depending on the surface.
Sealing light leaks
Overlap joins generously and tape seams, particularly around doors and any gaps where the dark cycle could be compromised by stray light.
Floor protection
Lay sheeting black-side-down as a cheap, replaceable floor covering to protect against spills and water damage.
Cutting to size
Measure your space first and buy slightly more than the exact dimensions to allow for overlaps and wastage at corners.

- Anyone needing extra light-proofing around doors or gaps in an existing space
- Budget growers who don't want to spend on a full tent for a DIY setup
- Growers wanting cheap, replaceable floor or bench protection
Best suited to DIY grow spaces rather than as a tent replacement for anyone wanting a fully sealed, quick-build option.
Our take
Simple, cheap, and it does exactly what it's meant to - block light where you don't want it and bounce it back where you do.
Worth picking up if you're building a DIY grow space rather than buying a tent outright.
