Vortex MDF Acoustic Box Fan Kit - High Airflow, Low Noise for Bigger Rooms
Best for: Growers running a larger space who want strong airflow without the noise a bare metal inline fan makes at that output.
Our thoughts
Box fans aren't cheap and they're not subtle, but if you've ever stood next to a metal inline fan screaming at full output, you'll understand why growers still buy these. The MDF housing swallows a huge amount of the noise the motor and blades would otherwise be pushing straight into your grow room.
The Vortex MDF Acoustic Box Fan Kit houses a high-output centrifugal fan inside a green MDF wood panel enclosure lined with sound-insulating material, built specifically to cut running noise without cutting airflow. The kit includes a matched Mammoth carbon filter, 5 metres of black combi ducting and duct clips, so it's ready to connect straight to a tent or room.
It's aimed at larger dedicated grow rooms rather than single tents, where both higher airflow and lower noise matter more than they do in a small space. Two sizes are available: 10-inch, rated at around 2,500 m³/h, and 12-inch, rated at around 3,250 m³/h.
How it compares
It's positioned above standard inline fans, in the premium acoustic-fan bracket.
- Vs standard metal-cased inline fans (Vortex's own Powerfan/S-Line range included): box fans trade a bulkier footprint for materially lower running noise at the same airflow
- Vs RVK acoustic box fans: a genuine like-for-like alternative in the same premium acoustic-fan segment
- Vs building your own soundproofed enclosure around a bare fan: buying it already boxed and matched to a filter is simpler and more consistent than DIY soundproofing
You're paying more for the housing and matched filter, but that's exactly what buys the noise reduction and consistent performance.
Usage guidance
Placement
Box fans are heavy and not designed to hang from tent poles. Stand the unit on the floor or a solid shelf, either inside a plant room or just outside the grow space.
Sizing
Choose 10" for larger tents or a small dedicated room, and step up to 12" once you're extracting from a full room running multiple lights.
Ducting run
Keep the supplied 5m combi ducting run as straight as possible between the box fan and the room or tent for the best real-world airflow.
Noise expectations
Quieter than an equivalent bare metal fan at the same airflow, but not silent - position it away from living spaces if noise is a concern.
Technical specifications
- Sizes: 10" (approx. 2,500 m³/h) and 12" (approx. 3,250 m³/h)
- Dimensions: 10" - 53 x 55 x 58cm; 12" - 57 x 58 x 59cm
- Housing: green MDF wood panel with acoustic insulation lining
- Included: fan, matched Mammoth carbon filter, 5m black combi ducting, duct clips
- Fan type: high-output centrifugal
- Best suited to: dedicated grow rooms rather than single tents
Who this is for
- Growers with a dedicated room rather than a single small tent
- Anyone extracting from multiple lights or plants where airflow needs to scale up
- Noise-conscious growers in shared housing or near living spaces
- Growers who've outgrown a standard inline fan and filter setup
Our take
This is a bigger investment than a standard inline fan and filter, but it buys you two things at once: real airflow for a larger space and noise levels that don't announce themselves through the wall.
If your current setup is either too loud or too small for the room it's in, this is the upgrade path. Does exactly what it should, day in, day out.
