IWS AutoDrain System — Standard Pipe / Standard Trays — Hand-Watering Automation Without the Fuss
Best for: Hand-watering growers who want automated runoff drainage and healthier roots without the complexity of recirculating systems
Our thoughts
If you hand water but hate the thought of plants sitting in stagnant runoff, this is the sweet spot. The IWS AutoDrain does the boring bit for you — detecting water, draining it away — while you keep control of feeding. Proper labour-saver for growers running 6–24 plants. One we recommend a lot for people stepping up from basic setups.
The IWS AutoDrain System is a run-to-waste drainage automation kit built around a float-sensor brain controller and flexible piping network. The idea is simple: you hand water as normal, excess nutrient solution drains into trays connected to the system, the brain detects the runoff, and an internal pump automatically sends it to waste. Plants never sit in standing water. Roots stay healthy. You save time. That's the entire pitch, and it works.
This standard pipe version comes with 16mm flexible piping, fittings, and standard AutoDrain trays, designed to work with IWS 16L or 25L cloth pots. The system is modular — add more trays, add more plants, expand as you go. No redesign needed.
How it compares
Run-to-waste systems occupy a specific place in the growing market — between basic hand watering and full recirculating automation.
-
vs. basic hand watering: You get automated drainage and root health management without buying a whole recirculating system
-
vs. recirculating systems: You use fresh nutrient solution every feed (no nutrient reuse), so pH and EC stay consistent and disease risk drops — but you use more nutrients overall
-
vs. gravity-only drainage: The internal pump means you're not limited by drain location or gravity advantage; pipe it where you need it
-
vs. premium alternatives: IWS delivers proven automation at mid-market pricing, with reliability that's well established in UK growing
Usage guidance
The IWS AutoDrain works best when you understand what it's actually for — it's a drainage helper, not a full irrigation system.
Hand watering with automated drain
Set up your plants in the standard trays, hand water as normal. Excess solution runs down into the tray, the float sensor in the brain detects it, the pump activates, and runoff is pumped away to waste. No standing water. No manual bucket work.
Root health and oxygen
By not leaving roots sitting in nutrient solution between feeds, you force the root zone to search for water. Roots develop faster and denser. Oxygen stays available. Pythium and root rot become far less likely. That's the core benefit.
Nutrient monitoring and control
Since each feed is fresh nutrient solution, you can check the runoff EC and pH to see exactly what your plants are taking up. This tells you if feeding is dialled in or if you need to adjust. That feedback loop is powerful if you care about consistency.
System size and scaling
The standard brain controller can gather runoff from as many plants as you connect — you're not limited by pot count. Start with 6 pots, add more trays and pipework later. No redesign.

Who this is for
- Hand-watering growers with 6–24 plants who want to stop manual runoff removal
- Growers prioritising root health and disease prevention over nutrient economy
- Anyone stepping up from basic setups but not ready for full drip automation
- Operators managing larger numbers of pots where drainage labour becomes a real pain point
- Growers who want consistent nutrient control without recirculating complexity
Particularly well suited to home and semi-professional setups where plant health and time-saving matter more than minimising nutrient costs.
Our take
The IWS AutoDrain does what it promises: removes the boring bits of hand watering while keeping you in control of feeding. It's not a full automated system, and it's not designed to be — it's a labour-saver that solves a real problem, standing water and manual drainage work.
If you're hand watering a decent number of plants and want healthier roots without overthinking it, this is worth picking up. Takes the hassle out of runoff management and lets you spend time on the actual growing. Good time to buy while stock lasts.
