IWS AutoDrain System Pro Pipe — Automatic Run-to-Waste Drainage for Hand-Watering Growers
Best for: Growers scaling up from hand-watering who want automatic drainage without the cost of full drip automation
Our thoughts
This is the smart middle ground between hobbyist hand-watering and full commercial automation. The Pro Pipe version handles larger setups cleanly, and because it's modular, you're not locked into a bundled drip system you might not need. One we sell a lot of to growers tired of emptying saucers but who want to keep feeding control in their hands.
The IWS AutoDrain System Pro Pipe is a modular run-to-waste drainage system designed to automatically remove nutrient solution run-off from your pots before it sits stagnant around the roots. Hand water as usual—the system detects when run-off accumulates in the control unit, triggers an internal pump, and drains waste away. It pairs with any feeding method, scales to handle 48+ pots, and gives you professional plant health without the complexity of full automation.
The Pro Pipe variant uses 25mm internal diameter flexi pipe, triple the flow rate of standard systems, and a Sicce Ultra Zero 3000 pump rated at 3000 litres per hour. That's the point: fast drain cycles, no bottlenecks, and the ability to handle serious-scale operations while keeping things simple.
How it compares
This sits in a unique position—it's drainage-only, not a bundled all-in-one system.
-
vs. Medusa Complete Drip & Drain: Medusa bundles drip feeding + drainage. AutoDrain gives you drainage only, so you pair it with hand-watering or your own dripper system. Less cost, more flexibility.
-
vs. FloraFlex Platforms: FloraFlex is premium and highly customisable but costs significantly more. AutoDrain does the same job—keeps roots out of standing water—at a much lower price point.
-
vs. manual saucer emptying: No more sponging, wet-vaccing, or syringing run-off. Automation handles it.
In plain terms: you get automatic drainage at entry-to-mid pricing without paying for integrated drip systems you might not want.
Usage guidance
Basic setup
Assemble the control unit with all fittings connected securely. Place your pots on the stands provided. Hand water plants as you normally would, allowing excess nutrient solution to drain into the control unit. The float sensor detects accumulation and triggers the pump automatically.
How the drainage works
When run-off reaches the lower float in the control unit, the pump activates and moves waste to a disposal point (sink, drain, waste barrel—wherever makes sense for your space). The system prevents roots from sitting in stagnant water, which is where pythium and root rot thrive. Roots stay oxygenated, plants stay healthier.
Monitoring and adjustment
Collect a sample of the run-off and check EC and pH. This tells you exactly what the plants are using and what they're rejecting. Adjust your nutrient mix accordingly. Because run-to-waste means fresh, balanced solution at every feed, plants are much less likely to suffer deficiencies—they're not re-fed their own waste products.
System maintenance
Check pipework and the control unit regularly for blockages or nutrient salt build-up. Clean as needed. The Pro Pipe 25mm diameter is larger than standard, so it's less prone to clogging, but regular inspection keeps things running smoothly.

Who this is for
- Hand-watering growers operating 12–48 pots who are tired of manual run-off removal
- Growers scaling up from hobby setups who want professional plant health without full automation cost
- Run-to-waste advocates who want fresh nutrient delivery at every feed
- Anyone concerned about root rot, pythium, or humidity control from stagnant water
- Growers who want to keep feeding control in their hands but automate the boring part (drainage)
Particularly well suited to growers who value simplicity and flexibility over bundled all-in-one systems.
Our take
This bridges a real gap in the market. Most automation is either full hand-watering (exhausting at scale) or premium bundled systems (expensive, inflexible). AutoDrain sits exactly in the middle—you keep control, you save labour, you get better plant health through oxygenation and run-to-waste feeding.
The Pro Pipe version is worth considering if you're running serious volume or if you just want the margin for error. Larger pipe diameter means faster drain cycles and less risk of blockages. Good time to buy while clearance stock lasts. Does exactly what it should, day in, day out.
