Canna Coco Natural 50 Litres - Pure Coco Coir Substrate for Healthy Roots
Best for: Growers wanting a lightly-buffered, 100% coco substrate they can dial in themselves rather than a heavily pre-buffered medium.
Our thoughts
This is coco in its more natural, less pre-processed form - lighter buffering means a bit more involvement from you early on, but more control over how the medium behaves through the grow. If you want to learn how coco actually works rather than have it done for you, this is the one to start with.
CANNA Coco Natural is made from 100% coco flakes, produced in India during coconut processing, with strict quality control through manufacturing. It contains 45% wood cellulose, which helps the medium hold its physical structure over a full grow rather than breaking down, and has a water-to-air ratio of around 73%/23% that suits fast root development.
It's more lightly buffered than CANNA's Coco Professional Plus, which means less water weight in the bag - around 11-12kg for this 50 litre size - and a bit more involvement from the grower in the early buffering stage, in exchange for more control over how the medium performs.
How it compares
Coco substrates vary mainly in how much buffering and processing has already been done for you.
- CANNA's own Coco Professional Plus is more heavily pre-buffered, trading grower control for a bit more convenience out of the bag
- Plagron Coco takes a similarly pure-coco approach for growers wanting to run their own nutrient line on top
- BioBizz's All-Mix and Light-Mix blend coco with added compost and nutrients, a different approach to Coco Natural's pure, unamended coco base
Coco Natural is designed to be run with a dedicated coco nutrient line, such as CANNA's own Coco A and B, rather than relying on nutrients already mixed into the substrate.
Usage guidance
A few habits help get the most from a pure coco substrate.
Pot size
Use pots of at least 5 litres - larger pots keep the root environment more stable as the plant grows.
First watering
Drip-feed with a light nutrient solution, around 2ml Coco A and 2ml Coco B per litre at pH 5.2-6.2, until the medium starts to drain.
Reuse
Coco Natural can be reused across a number of grows if it's flushed and rehydrated between cycles.
Environment
Aim for 20-25°C and high humidity while the medium and root system establish.

Who this is for
- Coco growers who want to manage their own buffering
- Growers looking to reuse substrate across multiple grows
- Anyone building a full CANNA Coco A and B feeding programme
Best suited to growers who want a bit more hands-on control over how their coco behaves, rather than a fully pre-buffered medium.
Our take
Coco Natural asks a little more of you early on than a pre-buffered medium, but the trade-off is a purer, more controllable substrate that rewards growers who want to understand what's happening in the root zone.
One we sell a lot of for growers moving into coco for the first time.
