Bluelab V2 Truncheon CF/EC/PPM Meter — Calibration-Free Nutrient Strength Measurement
Best for: Growers mixing batch nutrients who want instant, accurate EC readings without the calibration faff
Our thoughts
This is the meter you'll see in every serious grower's toolkit. No calibration, waterproof as they come, and it doubles as a stir stick for deep tanks. If you're batch mixing and want to know your nutrient strength dead accurate, this does the job better than anything else at this price point.
The Bluelab V2 Truncheon is an electrical conductivity meter built for growers who take their nutrient mixing seriously. It measures the strength of your solution in EC, CF, PPM 500, and PPM 700 scales, so you can read whatever scale your nutrient schedule uses. Factory calibrated and requiring zero recalibration, it eliminates one of the most annoying jobs in hydro growing — fiddling with calibration solutions every week. Waterproof, tough as nails, and designed to work in tanks and reservoirs without breaking a sweat, it's the meter of choice for growers who don't want to guess what their plants are actually eating.
How it compares
The Truncheon sits in the professional-grade, no-fuss category of EC meters.
- Factory calibrated — unlike budget meters that need regular recalibration
- Dual function as stir stick — measure and mix simultaneously in deep tanks
- Multi-scale readout — EC, CF, and both PPM conversions in one device
- Automatic temperature compensation — handles temperature fluctuations without manual adjustment
- 5-year warranty — serious confidence in durability
- More affordable than laboratory-grade Hanna equipment, more reliable than cheap generic alternatives
In reality, you're paying for the no-calibration convenience and build quality. Budget EC meters work fine if you're willing to calibrate them weekly. The Truncheon lets you skip that entirely.
Usage guidance
The Truncheon is designed around one core workflow: batch nutrient mixing.
Mixing your solution
Fill your tank or reservoir with water. Add nutrients according to your feed chart. Use the Truncheon as your stir stick — its rigid shaft does the job while you're mixing. Once you've stirred well, leave the probe end submerged for 1-2 minutes so it equalises to the solution temperature. Pull it out, dip it back in briefly, and read the LED display. Simple as that.
Reading the scales
The meter displays EC, CF, PPM 500, and PPM 700 simultaneously on its LED readout. Match whichever scale your nutrient manufacturer recommends. EC is the most accurate — it's the actual electrical conductivity measurement. PPM is derived from EC via conversion, and there are two different conversion methods in the industry (500 and 700 multipliers). Bluelab shows both, so you never have to guess or do maths.
Maintenance
Rinse the probe end with fresh water after every use. This is non-negotiable if you want accuracy and probe lifespan. Once a week, clean the electrodes properly with a Bluelab probe cleaning kit to shift any salt buildup. Follow that routine and your Truncheon will last years — growers report 3+ years of reliable accuracy from proper maintenance.

Who this is for
- Growers batch-mixing nutrients in deep tanks or large reservoirs
- Anyone moving from budget EC meters and tired of weekly calibration
- Precision growers who want to match their actual EC to their nutrient schedule
- Hobbyist and commercial operators alike — this meter scales with you
- Growers who want genuine durability without lab-grade pricing
Not ideal for growers using very low EC levels (below 0.5 EC) — the meter's minimum reading is around 100 PPM. But for standard nutrient mixing at 1-2 EC (which is where most growers sit), this hits the sweet spot perfectly.
Our take
The Bluelab Truncheon is the world's most popular EC meter for a reason. No calibration, waterproof, built to last, and it actually helps you work faster. If you're mixing nutrients and not checking your EC accurately, you're working blind. This removes that blind spot without the annual calibration nightmare.
Good time to buy while stock lasts. Proper kit at sensible value.
