Cactus Focus Repotting Mix 8 Litre - A Ready-Mixed Substrate for Cacti and Succulents
Best for: Anyone repotting cacti, succulents or other drought-tolerant plants who wants a substrate that's already balanced for them.
Our thoughts
Standard multipurpose compost holds far more water than a cactus wants, which is how a lot of them end up rotting from the roots up. This mix is built specifically to drain fast and feed for a couple of months, so you're not guessing at ratios yourself.
Cactus Focus Repotting Mix is made from coir, composted fine bark, sterilised soil, grit and sand, with a nutrient charge built in that feeds the plant for around two months after potting. That combination gives a gritty, free-draining structure that mimics the sharp drainage cacti and succulents need in their natural growing conditions, rather than the moisture-retentive mix most general compost is designed for.
Because the feed is already in the mix, you don't need to add a separate fertiliser straight after repotting - the built-in nutrient charge covers that early period while the plant settles in.
How it compares
Dedicated cactus substrates all aim for the same free-draining structure, just via slightly different mixes.
- Standard multipurpose compost holds too much water for cacti and succulents, which is the single biggest cause of root rot in these plants
- Westland's Cacti, Succulent and Citrus Compost takes a similar gritty, free-draining approach for the same plant group
- J. Arthur Bower's Cactus Compost follows the same principle, though formulations and included feed charges vary between brands
The core idea across all of these is drainage over water retention - this mix follows that principle with a built-in feed charge so you're not sorting fertiliser separately straight after potting.
Usage guidance
Repotting cacti is a bit different to repotting most houseplants.
Repotting
Fill the new pot loosely without compacting the mix, and keep the plant at the same depth it was growing at previously.
Watering after repotting
Hold off watering for a few days after repotting to let any root damage callus over, then water sparingly once the plant has settled.
Feeding after the initial charge
Once the built-in two-month nutrient charge runs out, switch to a dedicated cactus liquid feed rather than a general houseplant fertiliser.
