Basic pH & EC Testing Kit - Simple, Accurate Nutrient Testing on a Budget
Best for: New growers who need to check their nutrient solution's pH and strength without spending on a premium combo meter.
Our thoughts
We put this bundle together after testing a fair few budget pH and EC pens looking for the best balance of accuracy and price. You don't need to spend big to know what's actually in your nutrient tank - this covers the basics properly, at a price that makes sense for anyone starting out.
This kit pairs a pH pen with an EC (conductivity) pen, giving you the two most important readings for managing a nutrient solution: how acidic or alkaline it is, and how concentrated it is. Both are handheld, pocket-sized meters that take a reading in seconds once dipped into your mixed feed - no separate calibration equipment or lab gear required.
For most soil, coco and hydro growers, keeping pH in the right window (typically around 5.5-6.5 depending on your medium) and EC within the range your plants can handle at their current stage is the difference between steady growth and root problems. This kit gives you both readings without needing to learn a more complex meter system first.
How it compares
This sits at the entry-level end of nutrient testing kit, aimed at getting new growers reliable readings without overspending.
- Bluelab's Combo Meter or Pen range reads pH, EC and temperature together with better long-term accuracy and probe life, but costs several times more.
- Hanna Instruments' handheld meters are aimed more at professional or lab use, with a price tag to match.
- Compared to guessing feed strength by following bottle instructions alone, having any pH and EC readings at all is a big step up in control.
It won't match a premium meter for probe longevity or precision over years of use, but for someone learning the basics of nutrient management, it does the job at a fraction of the cost.
Usage guidance
Simple to use straight out of the box.
Taking a reading
Mix your nutrient solution as normal, then dip the pH pen and EC pen into the solution and let the reading settle for a few seconds before noting it down.
Calibration
Check your pH pen against a calibration solution periodically to make sure readings stay accurate - budget pens can drift faster than premium ones if left uncalibrated for long periods.
Cleaning
Rinse both probes with clean water after use and store dry (or in the recommended storage solution for your pH pen) to protect probe life.
Reading the numbers
Most soil growers target pH 6.0-6.5 and coco/hydro growers 5.5-6.0; EC targets vary by plant stage, so check your nutrient brand's feed chart alongside your reading.

Who this is for
- New growers who've never used a pH or EC meter before
- Budget-conscious growers who want basic monitoring without a big outlay
- Anyone currently feeding "by eye" who wants to start taking real readings
- Growers wanting a spare or backup meter alongside a main Bluelab setup
Best suited to hobby and first-time growers rather than commercial operations needing lab-grade precision.
Our take
Nutrient problems are one of the most common reasons new grows go wrong, and most of them come down to not knowing your actual pH and EC. This kit fixes that for very little outlay.
Particularly well suited to new growers. Worth picking up if you want straightforward feeding without the hassle.
