XXL Origin Systems — Timer-Based Drip Irrigation for Beginner to Experienced Growers
Best for: Growers moving from soil to hydroponic growing, or anyone wanting automated watering without the daily fuss
Our thoughts
This is a proper, established system with a rock-solid reputation. It bridges the gap between hand-watering and full hydroponics brilliantly — you keep the familiarity of pots, but get all the benefits of automated, timer-controlled feeding. Setup takes minutes, and once it's dialled in, it just works.
The XXL Origin System is a timer-based drip irrigation hydroponic system that automates your feeding schedule while letting you grow in whatever medium suits you — coco, rockwool, clay pebbles, or soil. A 150-litre reservoir sits beneath a 115cm × 115cm tray, with a pump pushing nutrient solution through drip-lines to your pots on a timer you control. What drains runs straight back into the reservoir. It's simple, it's repeatable, and it eliminates the guesswork of hand-watering.
The real win here is automation without complication. You're not managing daily watering schedules or worrying about overfeeding. The system feeds your plants little and often throughout the day — exactly what they prefer — while you get on with life.
How it compares
Origin sits in the mid-market drip irrigation space, alongside systems like Autopot and IWS.
-
vs Autopot: Origin uses a timer and pump (more control), Autopot is gravity-fed (lower power bills, less maintenance). Origin is simpler to set up and adjust; Autopot is more passive long-term.
-
vs hand-watering: Eliminates daily labour, reduces overfeeding risk, delivers consistent nutrition throughout the day instead of one big blast
-
vs deep water culture or NFT: Origin lets you use pots and familiar growing media — a proper bridge product for soil growers testing hydro for the first time
- Modular design means you can start small and scale up without replacing the whole system
Usage guidance
Setup (takes minutes)
Place the reservoir in position, stack the collection tray on top, arrange your pots, install the Maxi-Jet pump, connect the distribution piping and drip-lines. That's it. No special skills needed.
Feeding schedules (use a basic digital timer)
Coco or soil: Start phase 1 feed per day (15 minutes), veg 2–3 feeds per day, flowering 3–5 feeds per day. Adjust based on how your plants respond. The timer does the heavy lifting.
Clay pebbles or rockwool: Follow the same pattern; these media drain faster so you may need slightly longer or more frequent feeds.
Running it day-to-day
Check your reservoir level weekly. Top up with water as needed. Keep an eye on nutrient strength — EC (electrical conductivity) should stay consistent. If you're seeing signs of stress, it's usually nutrient imbalance or a blocked dripper, not the system itself.
Media flexibility
The beauty of Origin is you're not locked into one medium. Coco, rockwool, soil, clay pebbles — all work. Pick what suits your space and experience level. Transitioning from soil growers find this gives them all the automation benefits of hydroponics without ditching the pot-based approach they know.

Our take
The Origin system has been proven in thousands of grows. It's a straightforward, honest bit of kit that does exactly what it should — automates your feeding, saves you time, and produces reliable results across different media and growing styles.
Setup is genuinely minutes. Operation is simple: set the timer, monitor weekly, adjust if needed. Once it's running, you've cracked the biggest barrier to automated growing — the complexity of it all. This removes that barrier entirely.
Best suited to setups where you're growing 4 to 20 plants in spaces up to about 115cm square. Whether you're bridging from soil to hydroponics or just want to stop hand-watering, this hits the sweet spot between control, simplicity, and cost.
Good time to buy while clearance stock lasts.
