IWS Pro Remote Flood & Drain Grow System (10.5L Punch Pots) — British-Built Automated Hydroponics
Best for: Commercial-scale growers and serious hobbyists who want precision automation without the premium brand markup
Our thoughts
This is the system that built IWS's reputation for a reason. The Pro version is a genuinely clever piece of kit — faster flooding, dual drain pumps, proper modularity. If you're running more than a handful of pots and want your feeding on lock, it's worth the investment. One we sell a lot of for growers scaling up seriously.
The IWS Pro Remote Flood & Drain System is a fully automated hydroponic grow system that takes the guesswork and labour out of tending to larger plant counts. This British-designed ebb and flow system uses gravity-fed, bottom-up nutrient delivery controlled by a precision remote timer, allowing you to flood and drain your plants at exact intervals throughout the day. The Pro version steps up from the standard with 25mm pipework, a 3000 litre per hour pump, and dual drain capability — meaning faster cycles, better root oxygenation, and measurably better growth rates.
How it compares
The IWS Pro sits at the serious end of automated flood and drain systems in the UK market.
- Faster flood/drain cycles than standard IWS systems — fills a 48-pot setup in under 10 minutes
- Thicker 25mm pipework vs 13mm on the standard version — better flow, less restriction
- Dual pump system halves drain time compared to single-pump alternatives
- Modular design lets you start small (6 pots) and expand up to 48+ without replacing core components
- More affordable than electronic-brain systems (Alien XL) while delivering comparable cycle speeds for most growing scenarios
- Proven British engineering with decades of grower trust behind it
Compared to deep water culture, you're paying less upfront and running far lower electricity costs. Compared to soil, you get precise nutrient control and zero guesswork on feeding.
Usage guidance
How flood and drain works
Nutrient solution is pumped from the reservoir into the IWS Brain (a central manifold). As the Brain fills, all connected pots flood simultaneously. A float switch inside the Brain stops the pump when water reaches pot height, preventing overflow. When the timer cycles off, gravity drains everything back to the tank. Fresh oxygen rushes in as the media drains, supercharging root health and nutrient uptake.
Setting flood frequency
This depends on three things: your growing medium, plant size, and ambient temperature. Clay pebbles alone drain quickly and need more frequent floods (4-6 times daily). Coco or coco/pebble blends retain moisture longer, so 2-4 floods daily often works better. Start conservative, observe your plants, and adjust via the remote timer in 1-minute increments.
Growing media choice
We recommend clay pebbles for this system — they offer excellent drainage and air retention. Coco or 60/40 clay/coco blends work equally well and give slightly better water retention if you prefer less frequent floods.
Pot arrangement
You can arrange your pots however suits your space. The modular pipework means you're not locked into one configuration. Want to add or remove pots later? Literally just disconnect and reconnect the manifold fittings. No waste, no faffing.
Tank setup
The system comes with an IWS Flexi Tank (flexible, collapsible for storage). Place it lower than the pot level so gravity naturally drains back in. Tank size depends on pot count — the research brief suggests a 400L tank handles full systems comfortably.

Who this is for
- Growers expanding beyond hand-watering who want zero labour automated feeding
- Commercial-scale cultivators running 20+ plants needing precision and reliability
- Hobbyists serious about yield who want to eliminate human error from nutrient delivery
- Growers who want to scale gradually — start at 6 pots, expand to 12, 24, 48 as confidence and space allow
- Anyone running controlled-environment growing who values consistency and repeatability
- Growers on moderately tight budgets who want proven automation without paying for unnecessary electronics
Our take
This is a proper workhorse. The IWS Pro delivers on what flood and drain does best — simple, automated, oxygen-rich root feeding that scales with you. The 25mm pipework and dual drain system mean faster cycles than you'd get elsewhere at this price point, and the modular design means you're not locked in.
If you're serious about growing and ready to move beyond hand-tending individual pots, this is worth picking up while stock lasts. British-built, time-tested by thousands of growers, and it does exactly what it should, day in, day out.
