Vortex Acoustic MDF Box Fans — Silent Extraction for Large Grow Rooms
Best for: Growers running larger spaces who need serious extraction without the noise, or anyone fed up with a fan that sounds like a jet engine in the next room.
Our thoughts
Box fans have been the backbone of large-scale growing for decades, and the Vortex Acoustic range proves why. The thick MDF housing and proper soundproofing foam actually work — you're getting a genuinely quiet extraction fan without paying premium money for it. One we recommend a lot when growers outgrow portable solutions.
The Vortex Acoustic MDF Box Fan is a professional-grade extraction fan built inside thick, moisture-resistant green MDF panels with internal acoustic foam engineered for noise reduction. It's designed to move serious volumes of air out of large grow rooms whilst keeping noise levels down — a combination that's harder to find than you'd think. Unlike budget box fans that rattle like old tin cans, these are built to run quietly day in, day out. Available in multiple sizes and airflow ratings, from 6" up to 12", with outputs ranging from 1500m³/h to 4250m³/h, there's a Vortex fan that fits your space.
How it compares
Box fans are proven workhorses in the hydroponic industry. The Vortex sits in the quality mid-to-professional tier.
- Thicker MDF construction and better acoustic foam than standard budget box fans
- 8-metre hard-wired power cable vs the industry standard 5 metres — gives you genuine flexibility in larger spaces
- Green MDF lasts longer than standard wood, especially in humid grow environments
- Pre-boxed and ready to hang — no assembly guesswork
- Competitively priced against Tornado and Gorilla alternatives, with better cable length
Other box fans in the market exist. Some cost less, some claim more features. The Vortex trades on what actually matters: build quality, noise control, and a power cable that reaches where you need it.
Usage guidance
Box fans move air in or out of your grow space. Here's how growers actually use them:
As an extraction fan (most common setup)
Hang at the top of your grow area to pull hot air out. Connect your carbon filter to the inlet spigot so odour is removed before air leaves the space. Run ducting to an outside point and keep runs as short as possible — every extra metre of ducting reduces efficiency. Avoid sharp bends in the ducting layout or you'll choke the airflow.
As an intake fan
Position at the bottom or side to push fresh air into the space. Useful for larger setups where you're running multiple extraction points and need balanced air movement.
In smaller spaces
The lower-output models (1500m³/h) work well in tents up to around 1.5m x 1.5m. For larger rooms, step up to 2500m³/h or higher depending on your cubic footage.
Noise considerations
The acoustic foam and MDF housing genuinely reduce motor noise. If neighbour relations matter to you, this is where the Vortex design earns its money. It won't be silent — no extraction fan is — but it won't wake the household either.
With carbon filters
These fans pair directly with carbon filters via the inlet connection. The filter sits upstream of the fan, trapping odour before air exits.

Who this is for
- Large-scale or commercial growers who need proven, dependable extraction
- Growers in noise-sensitive locations (shared properties, residential areas)
- Anyone running multiple rooms or larger spaces where standard portable fans fall short
- Experienced growers who trust box fan design and want quality build without gimmicks
- Setups where carbon filter integration is essential
Particularly well suited to growers who've outgrown beginner kit and want something that'll run reliably for years without constant replacement.
Our take
Box fans are unfashionable compared to newer inline fan tech, but that's only because they work so well nobody thinks to upgrade them. The Vortex Acoustic range proves the principle is still sound — proper materials, real noise reduction, and an 8-metre cable that actually reaches. You're buying into decades of proven design, not marketing.
If you're setting up a larger space or replacing an old extractor, this is proper kit at a competitive price. Worth picking up while clearance stock lasts.
