Advanced Nutrients Piranha Liquid — Beneficial Fungi Root Mass Expander for Hydroponics
Best for: Growers running hydroponic systems who want to unlock nutrient availability and build stronger root zones without the premium brand price tag
Our thoughts
Piranha is a proper root zone inoculant that does what it says on the tin — colonises your rhizosphere with beneficial fungi that actually work. Over 200 million CFUs of the good stuff in every litre. It's an Advanced Nutrients product, so it's engineered well and compatible with everything. The price is high, but if you're serious about root health and yield in hydro, this is one that works. One a lot of growers rate.
Advanced Nutrients Piranha Liquid is a concentrated beneficial fungi inoculant designed to establish a thriving microbial ecosystem in your root zone. Loaded with over 200 million CFUs per application, it contains a blend of mycorrhizal fungi, trichoderma, and a proprietary bacterial strain that work together to unlock locked-up nutrients, strengthen root development, and build resilience against environmental stress. In simple terms: better roots, better nutrient uptake, better yields.
This is specialist kit for growers running hydroponic systems where natural soil microbes don't exist. Piranha replaces that missing microbial layer, turning your sterile growing environment into an efficient root-zone ecosystem.
How it compares
Piranha sits at the premium end of the beneficial fungi market, but with good reason.
-
vs budget granular products (Rootgrow, Envii Root Well): Piranha is liquid, so faster uptake and easier application in hydro systems. Higher CFU count per application. Proprietary bacterial strain you won't find elsewhere.
-
vs Great White and other premium brands: Comparable performance and pricing. Advanced Nutrients' compatibility with their full nutrient range is a genuine advantage if you're already running their base nutrients.
-
vs building your own compost tea: Consistent, stable, no guessing on microbial quality or contamination risk.
You're paying for engineered reliability and a proven microbial blend. Not cheap, but it works.
Usage guidance
Piranha is straightforward to use across different hydroponic setups:
Application rate
Add 2ml per litre of your feed water or nutrient solution. That's it. Mix it in and feed as normal.
Timing in the growing cycle
Use Piranha from rooted cuttings through to week 2 of flowering. Weeks 1–2 of growth phase, then weeks 1–2 of bloom phase. This is when root development and nutrient uptake are most critical.
System compatibility
Works with all hydroponic systems: drip irrigation, aeroponics, NFT, flood and drain, deep water culture, and continuous liquid-feed setups. It's designed for hydro, so liquid delivery is the whole point.
Nutrient compatibility
Piranha plays nicely with Advanced Nutrients base nutrients, and works equally well with any competitor brand. No conflicts.
Important — avoid peroxide products
Don't use hydrogen peroxide supplements or sterilising products alongside Piranha. Peroxide kills the beneficial microbes stone dead. If you're using peroxide protocols, Piranha isn't for you.
Synergy with other Advanced Nutrients products
Piranha is part of Advanced Nutrients' root mass expander trilogy. You can run it alongside Voodoo Juice (bacterial inoculant) and Tarantula (secondary bacterial inoculant) for a comprehensive root-zone ecosystem. Many growers do exactly this.

Who this is for
- Hydroponic growers running sterile systems (DWC, NFT, drip, flood and drain, aeroponics)
- Growers looking to maximise nutrient availability and root strength without compromising on performance
- Anyone already using Advanced Nutrients base nutrients and wanting a compatible microbial product
- Experienced growers who understand the value of a properly engineered root-zone ecosystem
- Operators running multiple systems where consistent, reliable microbial colonisation matters
Not for low-budget setups or growers using peroxide-based sterilisation protocols. This is specialist equipment for growers serious about root health.
Our take
Piranha is proper engineering. Over 200 million CFUs of beneficial fungi and bacteria, designed specifically for hydroponic systems where natural microbes are absent. It does what it's meant to do: colonises the root zone, unlocks locked-up nutrients (especially phosphorus and potassium), and builds resilience into your plants.
Yes, it's expensive. No, there's no way around that. But if you're running hydro seriously and you're not addressing root-zone biology, you're leaving yield on the table. This is one of the few beneficial fungi products that actually justifies the cost through consistent results.
