This 3 inch cylinder air stone works on the same principle as any air stone: it's a porous diffuser that breaks compressed air from a pump into a stream of fine bubbles, increasing the surface area of air in contact with your nutrient solution and raising dissolved oxygen levels around the root zone. The cylinder shape gives more surface area than a small ball stone, so it moves more air into the water for a given pump output.
Good oxygenation is especially important in hydroponic systems where roots sit directly in nutrient solution, such as DWC or RDWC setups, because oxygen-starved roots are far more vulnerable to rot and disease.
