AutoPot XL AV5 FlexiPot Grow Kits — Gravity-Fed Hydroponic System Without the Electricity
Best for: Growers who want hands-off automation without pumps, timers, or power bills
Our thoughts
This is proper kit for growers who've got better things to do than baby their plants. AutoPot XL AV5 FlexiPot does the heavy lifting—literally gravity-fed, zero electricity, zero timers. It sounds too simple to work, but it does. Once it's dialled in, you fill the reservoir and walk away. One a lot of experienced growers come back to, and one that'll suit busy first-timers just as well.
AutoPot XL AV5 FlexiPot Grow Kits are modular, gravity-fed hydroponic systems that deliver water and nutrients automatically without pumps, electricity, or timers. The AV5 AQUAvalve is the clever bit—a passive float valve that fills fabric pots from beneath to exactly 20mm, then lets plants drink that back down before refilling. Fabric FlexiPots provide air-pruning at the root zone, which means denser root systems and faster growth. It's bottom-feeding without the fuss, and it works because plants only get fed when they actually need it.
How it compares
This sits in the premium passive hydroponic space, competing against ebb-and-flood systems and electric-dependent kits.
-
vs. IWS / Ebb & Flood: IWS will grow faster and heavier, but needs constant power, more maintenance, and higher root rot risk. AutoPot trades a bit of peak yield for zero electricity and hands-off operation.
-
vs. DWC (Deep Water Culture): DWC yields bigger, but demands daily monitoring and water temperature control. AutoPot is the lazy grower's path to serious results.
-
vs. Hand Watering: No guessing, no lockout stress, no over or under-feeding. Automates the whole thing.
-
vs. Nutriculture / Alien Systems: Similar price point, but AutoPot has longer track record in UK market and stronger grower loyalty.
The trade-off is simple: you lose some peak performance headroom but gain genuine peace of mind and zero power dependency.
Usage guidance
AutoPot XL AV5 FlexiPot works across different space sizes and grower setups:
Setting up the kit
Fill the reservoir with coco coir-friendly nutrients (mineral nutrients work best; organic requires a small pump running every 2 hours). Connect the 6mm pipework from the tank to each pot's AQUAvalve tray. Plants sit in 20-litre fabric FlexiPots filled with coco coir. The valve automatically fills the tray beneath each pot to 20mm when plants drink it dry. That's it. No timers. No guessing.
Modular scaling
Available in 4-pot, 8-pot, 12-pot, 16-pot configurations and up to 100+ pot systems. Each 4-pot unit needs roughly 120cm x 120cm of space. Stack multiple kits side by side or expand as you grow. One reservoir can supply multiple connected units.
Growing medium
Coco coir is the optimal choice. Bottom-feeding only works if your medium wicks nutrient solution upwards through capillary action. Coco does this reliably. Soil works but isn't ideal because nutrients won't spread evenly through the rootball.
Fabric pot advantages
As roots touch the side walls of the FlexiPot, they're exposed to air and naturally prune back. This triggers the plant to generate more roots from the centre, creating incredibly dense root systems. Healthier roots mean faster growth and better nutrient uptake. The rigid fabric base keeps plants stable without needing rigid plastic.
Reservoir management
The 4-pot system includes a 47-litre reservoir. Check nutrient levels weekly, top up as plants drink, and change the reservoir every 3–4 weeks depending on growth stage. Once plants are established (3 weeks in), you can leave the system running for weeks with minimal checking.
Nutrient choice
Use coco-specific mineral nutrients for best results—they're designed for how coco binds and releases calcium, magnesium, and other essentials. Organic nutrients *can* work with AV5, but require a small submersible pump in the tank running 15 minutes every 2 hours to prevent settling and blockages. Mineral feeds are cleaner and simpler.

Who this is for
- Busy professionals or students who don't have time for daily watering schedules
- Growers wanting zero-electricity operation (off-grid, rural, or energy-conscious)
- First-time growers who need bulletproof automation to build confidence
- Experienced growers scaling up modularly without adding complexity
- Anyone tired of hand-watering stress, lockout, and overfeeding
- Commercial or semi-commercial operators needing reliable, scalable systems
- Growers in areas with unstable power supply
Particularly well suited to setups where consistency and low maintenance matter more than chasing absolute peak performance.
Our take
AutoPot XL AV5 FlexiPot is the thinking person's grow kit. It's not cheap, but it solves a real problem: how to run a successful automated system without becoming a slave to it. The AV5 upgrade—thicker pipework, better valves—means fewer blockages and more reliable operation than earlier models. Fabric pots genuinely deliver better roots than plastic, and the air-pruning effect is noticeable.
The gravity-fed approach feels low-tech until you realise it's actually smarter than most electric systems. Plants only get fed when they're ready, zero waste, zero timers, zero noise. Real growers swear by these, and there's good reason why. Worth picking up if you've got the space and want the peace of mind. Good time to grab one while stock holds.
